High School Diploma for Home-Educated Students
Home-educated students may earn a high school diploma by meeting the ND CDE requirement of 21
units of credit for high school graduation.
To receive credit for courses completed through home education, the student’s parent or legal
guardian must provide ND CDE with the following documentation:
- a written description or outline of the course material covered in each high school subject;
- a written description or list of course objectives;
- a written description on how the course objectives were met; and
- a transcript of the student’s performance in grades 9-12.
If any of the four items of required documentation are unavailable, ND CDE may evaluate whether
other reasonable proof is acceptable for the student to meet applicable requirements for high school
graduation. This option is available only to students planning to graduate from ND CDE.
There is a fee of $35.00 per one-semester course evaluated.
Home-educated students desiring to graduate from ND CDE must complete a minimum of one unit of
credit (two, one-semester courses) from ND CDE regardless of the number of credits earned through
the home-education evaluation process discussed previously.
Dual Credit
Under the dual-credit option, students can receive both high school and college credit for the successful
completion of a post-secondary or vocational course. To qualify for dual credit, the student must
be in eleventh or twelfth grade and enrolled in the ND CDE diploma program. The post-secondary
institution must be accredited by a national or regional accrediting organization. Before enrolling
in a course, the student must obtain permission from the ND CDE principal or academic advisor,
who will determine the number of credits for which the student is eligible. One-half high school credit
will be granted for each three-semester-hour, postsecondary course completed. The high school credit
will not be granted until ND CDE receives an official transcript from the post-secondary institution.
Credit by Life Experience
Adults age 19 or over who plan to graduate from ND CDE and who have experience in specific fields
may have that experience evaluated for high school credit. Vocational and career experience may qualify
for credit. However, there is a limit of three credits that may be earned. The Credit by Life Experience
option is NOT intended for job experience that occurs during the formative years of high school. Students
who receive credit by this option pay regular tuition costs
for each one-half unit of credit granted.
Please request the " Credit by Life Experience"
application from the ND CDE academic advisor at 701-231-6060 or
email Brian Becker.
This option is limited to students enrolled in the ND CDE diploma program.
No Credit
Students taking a course for self-enrichment/noncredit do not need a supervisor or the approval of
the local school administration. Tests are kept at ND CDE and sent upon request as subject matter is
completed. Testing is not mandatory since the course is not being taken for credit. Since these students
receive the teaching services provided by ND CDE, they pay the tuition and any fees for materials.
